ChatGPT image generation is now available in WhatsApp

OpenAI has announced that WhatsApp users can now access ChatGPT's image generator. The company announced the news on social media, but hasn't mentioned which model it uses for generating images.

OpenAI brought ChatGPT to WhatsApp in December 2024 with limited functionality for users in the U.S. Users can text the bot at 1-800-ChatGPT. Canadian and U.S. users can talk to ChatGPT for free for 30 minutes per month. In February this year, OpenAI updated ChatGPT's WhatsApp version to allow users to upload images and interact with the media.

How to access ChatGPT's image generator in WhatsApp

1. Save the following number as a contact on your phone: +1-800-242-8478. Or open this short URL: wa.me/18002428478

2. Open WhatsApp and start a conversation with the saved contact.

3. Ask the bot to "create an image...." followed by your query.

4. Wait for it to generate the image. It took a couple of minutes when I tested it.

Free users are limited to just 1 image request per day, probably to protect the servers from being overloaded. If you are a ChatGPT subscriber, you can link your account to WhatsApp to create more images. You can do so by visiting this page: https://chatgpt.com/link/whatsapp. Refer to the official support document for more information regarding the privacy policy, usage, etc.

You might ask, wouldn't it be easier to simply install the ChatGPT app on your phone, use its image generator directly, and share it with any app, not just via WhatsApp. But, you can actually use ChatGPT without signing up for an OpenAI account.

ChatGPT isn't the only AI you can access via WhatsApp, Perplexity AI can be accessed by texting +1-833-436-3285. There's also Meta AI, which was added to WhatsApp recently, though it has drawn criticism from users because the Meta AI button cannot be disabled. To make things worse, Meta has added ads in WhatsApp.
